Why is My House So Dusty? 5 Solutions

If you are cleaning as often as possible, but you still have impressive amounts of dust, there might be more than one problem with your home or cleaning technique. Although we can never clean all the dust in the air, there might be a few ways to solve this issue if you know the cause.

1. Cleaning Technique

Most people use a vacuum cleaner to clean their carpets and rugs. Unfortunately, these surfaces attract dust and dust mites, and vacuuming can make it worse because it releases dust and allergens into the air. The best solution would be to switch to a hardwood floor; if not possible, you could consider buying a more efficient vacuum cleaner, such as this one.

Most people dry-dust their homes which, unfortunately, is counter-productive. When you take the dust off with a dry cloth, all you do is move the particles around. Dust must be trapped with a wet cloth.

2. Humidity

An improper level of humidity in your home can be the cause of excessive dust. Both humid or very dry climates can lead to more dust in your house, so the best thing to do is get a high-quality humidifier and keep the dust levels under control.

3. Replace the Window Caulk

Most of the dust can enter your home from the outside. This is often the case when the window caulk is cracked or damaged. To fix this, you should re-caulk your windows and seal them so pollutants and dust will no longer get inside your home. You can do this in a few steps by yourself, so there’s no need to hire a professional.

4. Check your HVAC System

When was the last time you changed the HVAC filters? If the answer is not “recently”, then this might be the cause of so much dust. Also, there is another chance that the home is dusty even though you’ve recently changed the filters; in this case, it is worthwhile to mention that cheap and poor-quality filters will not be very efficient. All filters have a 1-16 rating (MERV); the higher the number, the more particles it catches. This MERV 16 filter might help you solve your dust issue.

5. Open Windows

Naturally, we open windows because we want fresher air. Unfortunately, this comes with a bonus – dust. This is particularly relevant if you live near busy roads or a busy city. In this case, you might want to consider buying an air purifier and keep your windows closed for a longer time.
