It is not time-consuming and can be quite easy on your budget. There are plenty of methods you can follow to frost glass. Follow the tips below to achieve more privacy in your home while enjoying the full benefits of natural light!
1. Frosted Glass Spray Paint
One of the easiest methods is to buy a glass spray paint, such as Rust-Oleum or Krylon. Even better, it can be easily removed if you want to go back to clear glass. For DIY solutions, this is the most common option and the quickest to apply.
All you need to do is clean the glass you want to frost and apply tape on the edges for easy clean-up afterwards. Apply a thin layer of frosted glass paint and allow it to dry. You can spray more afterward if you want the glass to be more opaque.
When you apply the layers, always start from the bottom after shaking the spray thoroughly. This results in an even layer, and you have better control over the spray. It is easier to add some more paint on the glass later on rather than clean it and do it all over again.
2. Apply Etching Cream
For a more permanent result, you can also apply etching cream. Each brand comes with slightly different instructions, so you should consult the manufacturer’s directions.
Generally, the steps are pretty similar. It would be best if you used tape to protect areas that you do not want to cover and then scrub the cream on the glass using a brush. Check the manufacturer’s instructions regarding how long you need to let the cream sit on the glass, then clean it with lukewarm water.
3. Install Frosted Window Film
Another option is to use frosted window film. It is easier to apply, but you should be careful with bubbles. Always start with a clean, residue-free window. The film can come in various sizes, so you should measure and cut it to fit your window. It is always a good idea to purchase a bit more window film just in case you make any mistakes.
Then, soak the window by spraying it with water and then spray the film after peeling the backing. To avoid fingerprints, spray some water on your hands, too. Adding baby shampoo to the water can help you prevent residues or other impurities throughout the entire process.
Start applying the film from the top part of the glass and work your way down. You can use a card or a scraper to eliminate bubbles. Once the film is placed, check whether it is centered and make adjustments if necessary. If the adhesive on the back starts drying before you are done, lightly respray it with the same solution.
Once you are done, you can trim the edges, but keep in mind that it will shrink about one-eighth of an inch after it dries. Avoid handling the glass for up to one week to allow the window film to dry thoroughly. If you placed the film on a door or a window, you should protect it as much as possible as it takes up to several days to be fully dry.
