As a Classical Homeopath, I treat my own children for both first aid situations and chronic complaints. In my practice I have prescribed for many children (and their parents) while continually marveling at the wonder of how homeopathic remedies heal our deepest emotional pain along with our physical symptoms. Homeopathy is a system of natural medicine that uses highly diluted substances (made of plants, minerals, bacteria, and animal secretions) in order to trigger the body’s innate healing power. In Classical Homeopathy, one unique remedy is chosen that is specifically tailored to fit the patient’s individual set of symptoms. After having lived and breathed this holistic model of medicine for some time, it was a blessing to find Waldorf education for my children that echoed what I so strongly believed about healing.
I became interested in Classical Homeopathy about 18 years ago when I contracted a lingering case of glandular fever (Mononeucleosis). I was exhausted for over a year, and repeated antibiotics had weakened my system. When the doctors told me that there was nothing they could do about the glandular fever, and that I would have to just “wait it out,” I went for alternative methods. Classical Homeopathy was what cured me and as a result I decided to become a practitioner.
One of the things that intrigued me most about Homeopathy was the way in which the person’s “constitutional” (uniquely tailored) homeopathic remedy is researched and found. That it is customized specifically to the patient by understanding him or her holistically. By holistic, I mean all parts: physical, mental, and emotional. The dis-ease or imbalance most often resides in at least two of those areas even though they may not seem related. The emotional and mental aspects of the person are what make him especially unique, so this is what I look at first and foremost to assess how the imbalance is manifesting. Anyone can have recurring ear infections or uterine fibroids, but not everyone has you or your child’s unique style of expression, fears, and deep-seated emotional pain and conflict.
For example, I recently treated a five-year-old boy who was brought in for chronic asthma but his emotional symptoms included intense fears when not being near his mother, which made it impossible for him to separate from her whether it was for school, play-dates, or her even going into a different room. He also was prone to violent outbursts of rage that were exhausting for him and wearing on his parents. Because his physical symptoms were non-descript, the emotional and mental symptoms were what differentiated him from another child suffering from asthma. I chose a constitutional remedy that matched him on all levels of imbalance. His response was curative and now he is much more independent, happy, and less prone to angry outbursts. His asthma is no longer chronic and he rarely gets sick.
When I became a mom, I realized that Waldorf Education most closely matched my already steadfast beliefs. Similar to holistic healing in its attention to all levels of a person, Waldorf Education is about honoring the “head, heart, and hands.” What I love about it is the way that intellectual learning is only one facet of this approach and that the whole child’s spiritual, emotional, and creative aspects are all considered equally important. Similar to the status quo educational system in the United States that separates and teaches mainly to the cerebral, the Western medical model is based on separating out physical symptoms and treating them alone, as if the person were only his brain or his body existed alone. Both Waldorf and Homeopathy realize how unique we all are, that we have a soul and a spirit that manifests in all facets of us. We are not cut off from ourselves with these models, but respected, healed, and freed to become more intensely and creatively ourselves. As Plato wrote 2400 years ago: “As you ought not to attempt to cure the eyes without the head, or the head without the body, so neither ought you to attempt to cure the body without the soul.”
In terms of our children, just as their education is important, the way that they are healed is also essential. It is fulfilling to be able to help children back into balance and joy from a state of imbalance in the gentle way of homeopathy. I recently treated an eight year-old girl who was brought in because of a lingering case of whooping cough. It came out that she was quite sad at school and didn’t feel that she could connect with her peers. Previously, she had always been a happy, social girl, which made this symptom stand out. There had been an incident before this all began of a grandmother and a beloved pet dying that had set her off into this imbalanced state on all levels. When I understood this and found her constitutional remedy, her symptoms healed from the inside out and she went back to being the social, healthy, and happy girl that she really was. In other words, the homeopathic remedy brought her out of a place of stagnation, unlocking the flow of her natural, creative life force, thereby allowing her to fully recover.
Homeopathic healing, like Waldorf education, works from the inside out. By this I mean that when you are given a homeopathic remedy that is right for you, your innermost imbalance, that likely resides on an emotional and mental level, heals first. Then, as in a ripple effect, the healing moves outward to the physical complaint. This happens gently and over weeks or months. In Waldorf education, daily lessons and activities are experienced and integrated through the senses, so that what is learned seeps into every cell of the child. She experiences education from a feeling sense. It is not imposed upon her, but is integrated into her natural development. We all have emotional imbalances and issues to deal with, as do our children, but with the combination of a Waldorf education and holistic medicine like homeopathy, we have some profound tools for living a full and creative life.
