Porridge is such a wonderful and nourishing comfort food on cold blustery days. My little girls love to pretend to be Daddy Bear, Mama Bear and Baby Bear while we cook. Incorporating food and storytelling is always a magical way to bring literature to life, and kids into the kitchen. Share with your children the tale of Goldilocks and the Three Bears as you enjoy making this porridge together.
1 ½ cups of rolled porridge oats
700 ml of milk / water or a mix of both
1 teaspoon of cinnamon
1 grated apple
A handful of pumpkin seeds (optional)
A handful of raisins (optional)
½ teaspoon of salt (optional)
1 tablespoon of manuka honey or a little agave syrup or prune juice
A sprinkling of hemp or flax seed
Pour the oats into a pan, slowly adding the liquid over a medium heat, stirring continuously.
Then add all the other ingredients one by one except your sweetener of choice. Save that for the top of each bear portion. Baby bears like stirring in the honey and watching it mix and swirl as it melts into the warming porridge.
I often set out three chairs: one big, one medium and one little for my girls according to their ages, and we read the story of the three bears as they eat their favourite snack!
