Winter Wonderland

Living on the Front Range of Northern Colorado, winter can be a very long season. Having two active boys, I have come to realize that rain or shine, wind or snow, we always have to find a way to head outside.

My children have fallen in love with the idea of treasure hunts, and winter picnics, and it has been a fun tradition for us to pick a day to head out side and enjoy the crisp air and silent nature that a winter day can bring.

There are many celebrations throughout winter, and we normally try to pick a day to celebrate that is far away from the madness of the holiday season. We pack picnic baskets full of hot soups, breads, cakes and tea and head out with blankets and hand warmers galore.

The best spots are those that have meaning in our every day lives. We try and find a space that is quiet, full of trees and forest animals, and that has tons of space for the little ones to enjoy. Magical treasure hunts to find shiny stones and gems is a favorite activity, and roasting marshmallows and singing winter songs always caps off a perfect day.

Winter Wonderland #2

The idea of a Winter Wonderland celebration is to teach children about what is happening in nature during this very quiet time. Winter is normally thought of as being dormant, and almost lifeless. However, upon closer inspection, there is still a lot of life to be viewed.

Long hikes through the forests, trips into the mountains, walks along the shores of the ocean can all teach us the seasonal patterns of winter in our area. It also gives both children and adults a time to reflect on the peace that winter can bring.

Bundling up for a winter excursion is always a must. Layering children in woolens and and warm hats, coats, scarves and mittens ensures that everyone will enjoy their time outdoors.

Winter is a beautiful time of year that can be enjoyed to the fullest.
