A few years ago, my family and I began a thankfulness journal as a way of preparing our hearts for a season of giving and being more appreciative for the things that we have in our life. We bring the journal out in late October and leave it in a prominent location (like our coffee table) until after New Year’s day. Included in the journal are lists of personal things we are thankful for as well as thoughts, quotes and poems about giving to others. Anyone that has come to our home for Thanksgiving dinner is included in our book. And after five years of keeping our thankfulness journal, we are so happy to have these words as inspiration for our family.
Materials
Autumn-colored felt
Scissors
Embroidery needle
Embroidery thread in autumn colors
Sewing machine
Composition notebook or other journal
Instructions
Lay out a large piece of felt that will become the body of your book cover. Place your book on top of the felt and measure your felt piece. To do this, roll the book over the felt, marking it as you go, allowing a half inch at the top and the bottom of the journal and four inch allowance on each side.
The felt jacket should fit well but should still allow for movement of the journal’s spine.
Fit the jacket to your journal and pin the top and bottom seams to make sure it fits. Sew top and bottom seams. After sewing, turn the book cover inside out to reveal the clean seams. Tuck front and back covers of the journal-in to front and back cover pockets.
Cut out any symbols of autumn from the remaining felt pieces. Ideas include squirrels and nuts, leaves, initials, etc. Take the jacket off the journal and using the embroidery thread, attach your autumn symbols to the cover of your book.
