    Welcome Spring Wreath

    Celebration , Spring 2012
On: February 25, 2012, By: Rhythm of the Home, In: Celebration, Spring 2012, 4 Comments

Every year, when the calendar page turns to January, I breathe a heavy sigh as I resign myself to several long months of cold, gray, and dreary weather. As if on cue, the seed catalogs start to arrive, lifting my spirits and helping me to turn my eyes forward to spring. Dog-eared and paged through again and again, I have a hard time sending these treasures to the recycling bin, even after the year’s order is placed. The photographs are too rich and lovely. The descriptions too lovingly written. But, I also lack the space to store them all and if I stash them away I forget to enjoy them. So, I decided to bring them into my everyday by transforming their pages into a wreath. Gazing at it daily, I find myself inspired to welcome spring and get those garden beds started!

    Materials

Seed catalog (Seed Saver’s Exchange and Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds are two of my favorites)

    Hot glue gun

    8” wooden embroidery hoop

Printed copy of the downloadable “Welcome Spring” sign, or your own sign

    Scissors

    Tape

    Instructions

Choose twenty or so of your favorite pages from your seed catalog. You may need more or less, depending on how tightly you roll your cones.

Roll each page into a cone so that the most lovely of the photos faces out. You’ll have to play a bit with how to achieve this, as all catalog layouts are different. The process I used was to place the sheet on the table, wrong-side up. Starting in the lower left-hand corner, roll the page up towards the upper right-hand corner.

When you reach about halfway up on the left side, hold the left-side stationary to create a pivot point. Roll around from right to left so that the upper right-hand corner creates the point at the end of the cone. Fold the raw edge in and secure with tape.

Using a hot glue gun, glue the cones to the embroidery hoop so that they all meet at a point in the center. Don’t worry too much about being exact, as the “Welcome Spring” sign will cover it if they don’t line up perfectly.

Print out the downloadable WelcomeSpring sign and cut it out. If desired, you can hand color to your liking. Run a bead of hot glue around the backside and adhere to the center of the wreath.

Hang, enjoy, and then get outside to the garden!
